A Center to Recreate

What’s the best way to build a community recreation center? With the community of course; and having enough grant funding to fund the project always helps too. That’s exactly what we did as a subconsultant to MNS Engineers for the Tehachapi Valley Recreation Center. To prepare the grant funding submittal, our team started the design process by identifying the client’s goals and conducting a site opportunities and constraints analysis. Next, we researched the architectural typologies in the area to use as design references for the center’s design. From outreach with the community, led by the client team with our support, we gained input on design concepts. 

Based on community input, the final design included two recreational buildings for basketball and other sports, and a central check in area, all oriented to define the street edge and create a large internal courtyard. The site design included a fitness trail, smaller courtyards, an events stage and its seating area and a children’s playground.
