Planning Services
Making cities work is not just in our name, it is our passion. Our design team’s focus on placemaking that is functional, beautiful, and authentic to its time and place is enriched by the community stakeholder input that is facilitated by our team of public participation practitioners. Our integrated team helps communities work together to define a shared vision for the future that is equitable, sustainable and leverages human-focused technology and innovation. The result is plans and programs that are supported by the majority of community stakeholders leading to smoother short and long-term implementation.

The CityWorks’ team employs a variety of methods to support the design process when analyzing existing conditions, developing design concepts and preparing planning documentation as well as engaging community stakeholders. The methodologies that supports all planning work is the firm’s patented “9 Elements of a Successful District”, developed by the firm’s founders and its commitment and skill implementing the International Association of Public Participation’s (IAP2) methods for community engagement.

The “9 Elements of a Successful District” is the idea that it isn’t just one aspect of a district that makes it function well, but many that when working in harmony successfully serve the needs of its community, city and region. Our design team uses these “9 Elements” to organize existing conditions analysis and to test design concepts that evolve through the planning process. Additionally, these elements are used by our engagement team to help community stakeholders organize their thoughts of what is working or needs improvement in their own community. Whether it is a walking tour, a workshop to define a vision, a public review of plan refinements or the roll-out of short and long-term improvements, these elements provide a stable touchpoint for the community to define a future vision.
